On February 11, 2024, at approximately 7:49 p.m., Lubbock Police Department officers responded to a report of shots fired at the Hub City Inn, located in the 5200 block of Avenue Q South Drive. Upon arrival, they discovered 35-year-old Orion Akins with a gunshot wound; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigations revealed that Akins entered a motel room where 27-year-old Brian "Tray" Anderson was present.
Witnesses reported that upon seeing Akins, Anderson drew a pistol and shot him before fleeing the scene. Anderson later admitted to the shooting, citing a prior altercation with Akins that made him feel "trapped" and "fearful," though he acknowledged not seeing Akins with a weapon at the time.
Following the incident, a warrant was issued for Anderson's arrest on charges including Unlawful Possession of a Firearm. On February 23, 2024, around 4:30 p.m., Anderson was apprehended in Hockley County without incident. Subsequently, a murder warrant was officially issued for his role in Akins' death.
As of the latest available information, Anderson remains in custody at the Lubbock County Detention Center, facing charges of Murder and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, with bonds totaling $260,000.
