On March 19, 2024, Nicholas Hughes, a 29-year-old resident of Beaumont, Texas, was found deceased from a gunshot wound in an alley behind Ace's convenience store, located in the 2000 block of Magnolia Avenue.
The Beaumont Police Department promptly initiated an investigation and identified 35-year-old Beaumont resident Malcolm Jamall Haymond as a suspect in Hughes' death.
A murder warrant was issued for Haymond's arrest, with a bond set at $900,000 by Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Ben Collins Sr.
On March 21, 2024, Haymond surrendered to authorities and was taken into custody. Upon his arrest, he admitted to shooting Hughes but claimed it was in self-defense. He also expressed remorse and apologized to Hughes' family.
Subsequently, a Jefferson County grand jury indicted Haymond for murder. He remains in custody at the Jefferson County Correctional Facility, with his bond maintained at $900,000.
Nicholas Hughes was remembered by his family, who chose to have his remains cremated, with his ashes cherished by loved ones.
