On the evening of April 27, 2024, at approximately 9:50 p.m., Houston police responded to a shooting incident at 8100 Martin Luther King Boulevard. Upon arrival, officers discovered 24-year-old Sarah Taplin suffering from a gunshot wound; she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigations revealed that an argument had erupted between Sarah and an unidentified woman in a parking lot.
During the altercation, Sarah's brother, 35-year-old Richard Taplin, allegedly obtained a firearm from someone nearby and began firing at the unidentified woman as she fled. In the process, Richard reportedly fired indiscriminately into a crowded gas station parking lot across the street. Tragically, during this chaotic episode, Sarah was struck by gunfire and succumbed to her injuries.
Following the incident, Richard fled the scene. Authorities considered him armed and dangerous and issued charges for murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and unlawful carry of a weapon with a felony conviction.
After nearly a month-long search, law enforcement agencies, including the Houston Police Department's Southeast Division Crime Suppression Team, the U.S. Marshals Service's Gulf Coast Violent Offender Fugitive Task Force, and the Arizona Wanted Violent Offender Task Force, apprehended Richard in Phoenix, Arizona, on May 20, 2024. He was subsequently held in Maricopa County Jail, awaiting extradition to Harris County to face the charges against him.
