On May 22, 2024, at approximately 9:59 p.m., Austin Police Department officers responded to reports of a shooting at the Villas de la Plaza apartment complex, located at 9601 Middle Fiskville Road in northeast Austin. Upon arrival, they discovered 35-year-old Wilfredo Benitez-Jimenez lying on the living room floor of his apartment with apparent gunshot wounds.
Despite prompt medical assistance from Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services, Benitez-Jimenez was pronounced dead at 10:13 p.m.
The initial investigation revealed that Benitez-Jimenez had been shot inside his apartment by suspects who subsequently fled the scene in a vehicle. Homicide detectives and crime scene specialists processed the area and interviewed witnesses to gather information. The case was classified as Austin's 23rd homicide of 2024.
In the ensuing weeks, detectives utilized apartment security footage, witness testimonies, and cell phone location data to identify two suspects: Carlos J. Maldonado and Victor Antonio Maldonado Villalobos. The security video reportedly showed two individuals matching their descriptions entering and exiting the victim's apartment around the time gunshots were heard. On June 12, Maldonado was apprehended outside his residence in Pflugerville. During police interviews, he confirmed that Villalobos, who resided with him, was the second individual seen in the footage. Maldonado disclosed that they had gone to Benitez-Jimenez's apartment because they felt threatened by him and believed a preemptive strike was necessary. Based on the evidence and Maldonado's statements, authorities believe Villalobos fired the shots that killed Benitez-Jimenez. Both men were subsequently charged with murder for their alleged involvement in the homicide.
