On the night of July 4, 2024, a tragic shooting occurred at the Crystal Clean Car Wash on West Cleburne Road in Fort Worth, Texas, resulting in the death of 42-year-old Terrell Wynn. Wynn, who had moved to Fort Worth from Louisiana seeking a better life, was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire. His sister, Twyla Winn, expressed profound grief, stating, "I just hate that he was caught at the wrong place at the wrong time."
The incident began when 27-year-old Kanard Trent Murphy arrived at the car wash to see his infant daughter, who was with her mother at the time. Due to prior domestic violence issues between Murphy and the child's mother, tensions were high among her relatives. An altercation ensued between Murphy and one of these relatives. Initially, it appeared to be a fistfight, but after placing his daughter in his car, Murphy retrieved a rifle and began firing at the unarmed relative as he fled.
Murphy's gunfire struck a parked car containing three young children in the backseat. Tragically, 1-year-old Wynter Thouston and 4-year-old Ivy Pierce were fatally wounded, while their older sister sustained a non-life-threatening injury. Additionally, Wynn was struck in the leg by the gunfire, leading to his death at the hospital. An unknown individual at the scene shot Murphy in the upper back, causing him to drop his weapon, which was then secured by a bystander.
Murphy was subsequently arrested and charged with capital murder of multiple persons. After receiving medical treatment, he was transported to the Tarrant County Jail. The community mourned the loss of the victims, with family members organizing memorials and expressing their heartbreak over the senseless violence. Fort Worth Police Chief Neil Noakes stated, "My heart breaks for the families who are waking up after the Fourth of July, a day meant for celebration, to grieve the loss of young lives taken from senseless crime."
