On July 8, 2024, at approximately 2:20 a.m., residents of an apartment complex at 10630 Beechnut Street in Houston, Texas, were startled by the sound of gunshots. Upon investigation, they discovered 49-year-old Albert Christopher Brant lying in a common area with apparent gunshot wounds. Emergency responders arrived promptly, but Mr. Brant was pronounced dead at the scene.
Initially, there were no known suspects or motives in the case.
However, as the investigation progressed, detectives identified 19-year-old Jaden Matthew Yates-Lawal as a suspect. On July 29, 2024, officers from the Houston Police Department's Westside Patrol Division Crime Suppression Team arrested Yates-Lawal. He was subsequently charged with Mr. Brant's murder in the 182nd State District Court. In addition to the murder charge, Yates-Lawal faced charges related to an unrelated robbery incident at the same apartment complex.
The arrest brought some relief to the community, though questions about the motive behind the shooting remained unanswered.
