On the evening of July 17, 2024, 23-year-old Charles Dennis III was fatally shot in Old East Dallas. The incident occurred around 10:48 p.m. in the 3500 block of Munger Avenue, near the Roseland Townhomes. Responding to reports of gunfire, Dallas Police found Dennis outside the townhomes with a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with numerous bullets striking vehicles and residences in the vicinity. Neighbors, including Deleatrice Smith and Anita Bell, recounted their shock and distress upon discovering Dennis wounded on the sidewalk. Smith noted that her car had been hit by bullets, and Bell mentioned bullet holes in her home. Both expressed concerns about the escalating violence in their neighborhood.
Investigations revealed that Dennis, who had recently moved to Dallas from Louisiana, was likely an unintended victim caught in the crossfire of a shootout near the Roseland Homes Housing Community. He had been walking back to his Hall Street Flats apartment after purchasing his usual snacks from a nearby convenience store when the tragedy occurred.
Dennis was a magna cum laude graduate of Southern University in Louisiana, holding a degree in accounting. He was also pursuing a master's degree from Texas Wesleyan University. His parents, Charles Jr. and Meeka Dennis, traveled from Louisiana to Dallas to pack up their son's apartment and have been pleading for anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. They emphasized the profound loss of their son, who had moved to Dallas seeking better opportunities.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with Dennis's death. Dallas Police have not released any suspect descriptions and continue to investigate the case. Detectives have urged the public to provide any information that might assist in solving the case, highlighting the importance of community cooperation in bringing justice for Dennis and his family.
