Patrick Ray Cantu Jr., a 22-year-old resident of Corpus Christi, Texas, tragically lost his life on July 18, 2024, in a shooting incident at La Armada Housing complex. Cantu, born on February 18, 2002, in Houston, Texas, was a former Golden Gloves champion in the 140-lb. junior weight division in 2019.
The incident occurred on the 3800 block of Brandywine Court, behind Home Depot.
Police responded to reports of a shooting just before 8:30 PM and found Cantu with multiple gunshot wounds. He was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
According to reports, Cantu was involved in an altercation with neighbors before the shooting. His stepmother, Amanda Rubio, stated that Cantu was in the process of moving furniture into an apartment when the argument started. The situation escalated, and someone pulled a gun on Cantu.
Initially, no arrests were made, and the Corpus Christi Police Department interviewed witnesses as part of their investigation. However, on July 26, 2024, the C.C.P.D. announced two arrests in connection with Cantu's death. The suspects were identified as 41-year-old Rodolfo Silvas and 21-year-old Xavier Reyna.
An affidavit for the arrests revealed that Cantu was shot in the face during the incident. The two suspects were taken into custody and charged with murder in relation to the July 18 shooting.
The community mourned the loss of Cantu, who was described by his family as a loving person with a passion for boxing. His untimely death shocked those who knew him, and his obituary noted the tragic circumstances of his passing.
