In the early morning hours of October 19, 2018, the life of 23-year-old Caucasian male Jason Flink was tragically cut short in a violent encounter at the Mountain Valley Inn motel in Missoula, Montana. What began as a dispute over drugs escalated into a brutal attack that left two people dead and another seriously injured. The incident was set in motion when Jonathan Reed Whitworth and Preston Rossbach, angered over what they considered "bad drugs," went to the motel seeking the dealer they
held responsible.
Upon arriving at the motel, Whitworth and Rossbach forced their way into a room. When they discovered the dealer was not present, they briefly left, only to return moments later with violent intentions. Inside the room were Jason Flink, Megan McLaughlin, 31, and Kaleb Williams. Whitworth opened fire on all three individuals. In an attempt to eliminate any witnesses, Rossbach then proceeded to stab the victims. Both Flink and McLaughlin succumbed to their injuries at the scene, while Williams, despite being shot and severely wounded by knife cuts, survived the attack.
The investigation that followed led law enforcement to identify Whitworth and Rossbach as the primary suspects. Surveillance footage from the motel captured the two men, armed with firearms, leaving the scene. Rossbach was apprehended by police shortly after the murders. Whitworth managed to evade capture for a couple of days before he was arrested near the Missoula International Airport, following a tip from the public. Both men were subsequently charged in connection with the double homicide.
Jonathan Reed Whitworth, who admitted to being on a nine-day methamphetamine binge leading up to the killings, chose to plead guilty to two counts of deliberate homicide and one count of assault with a weapon. He received a sentence of 100 years in prison. His accomplice, Preston Rossbach, was found guilty by a jury and was sentenced to 60 years behind bars for his role in the brutal slayings. The resolution of the court cases brought a measure of justice for the families of Jason Flink and Megan McLaughlin, whose lives were senselessly taken in a violent, drug-fueled rage.
