On January 3, 2021, in Missoula, Montana, 22-year-old Colton Ryan Merritt fatally shot his father, 57-year-old Daniel L. Merritt, at their residence on Bailey Street. Colton reported the incident to authorities approximately 21 hours later, on January 4, stating that he acted in self-defense.
