On August 30, 2024, at approximately 11 p.m., Royse City Police Department officers responded to a reported accidental shooting at a residence in the 6100 block of County Road 2597 in Royse City, Texas. Upon arrival, they found 18-year-old Alexander Villegas, a student at Royse City High School, conscious with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. Villegas informed the officers that he had been handling a handgun when it accidentally discharged.
He was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Subsequent investigations by the Royse City Police Department revealed inconsistencies between the initial statements and the physical evidence. Detectives executed a search warrant at the residence and conducted follow-up interviews with three juveniles present at the scene. It was determined that a 16-year-old friend of Villegas had been negligently handling the firearm when it discharged, striking Villegas. Although the shooting is believed to be accidental, the 16-year-old was detained and charged with criminally negligent homicide, a state jail felony.
