The incident occurred around 10:50 p.m. at a Love's gas station on Polk Street, directly across from John Kincaide Stadium, where a game between Duncanville and South Oak Cliff had just concluded.
According to the Dallas Police Department, a large crowd had gathered at the gas station.
Within this crowd, a group began following Washington, leading to a physical altercation during which an unknown individual shot him. Emergency responders transported Washington to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Dallas police arrested a 16-year-old suspect on September 7, 2024, charging the individual with murder in connection to Washington's death. Due to the suspect's juvenile status, authorities have withheld their identity.
