On October 21, 2024, at approximately 6:01 p.m., Austin Police Department officers responded to multiple reports of a shooting at the Bridge at Harris Ridge Apartments, located at 1501 East Howard Lane in northeast Austin. Upon arrival, they discovered 16-year-old Za’Riyah Sheffield with apparent gunshot wounds; she was pronounced deceased at the scene at 6:09 p.m.
Investigations revealed that a 16-year-old male suspect accused Za’Riyah of "simply looking at him," which escalated into a verbal altercation. The confrontation culminated with the suspect fatally shooting Za’Riyah in the apartment complex's parking lot. The suspect fled on foot but later returned to the area, where he was apprehended by officers. He has been charged with first-degree murder.
Za’Riyah was a student at Connally High School in Pflugerville Independent School District, remembered by her family as a loving individual with aspirations in business. Her untimely death has left her family and the community in profound grief.
