On June 30, 1973, Sylvia Ann Torgerson, a 3-year-old white female from Austin, Minnesota, was tragically murdered in what would later be revealed as part of a mass killing carried out by her father, David James Torgerson. Sylvia was one of several victims in a horrific incident that unfolded in Rochester, Minnesota, where multiple members of the Torgerson family and a live-in babysitter were found dead.
The method of killing was strangulation, and the deaths occurred on the same day.
Sylvia's father, David Torgerson, born in Austin, Minnesota in 1943, had a documented history of mental illness and violent behavior. He had spent years in and out of psychiatric institutions, including the Rochester State Hospital, where he had previously assaulted staff members. Despite his troubling past, he was released and later placed in a work release program. It was during this period that he committed the murders of his wife, Lana Alice Torgerson his children Sylvia Ann and John David and their babysitter Rebecca Rathbun.
Following the killings, David Torgerson was apprehended and returned to prison. During his incarceration, he confessed to additional murders, including those of Julie Mehrman and Linda Wandrus, both 18-year-old white females who had been strangled in separate incidents in 1969. He also claimed responsibility for two other attacks, though those victims survived and their identities were never publicly disclosed.
David Torgerson never stood trial for the murders. Before legal proceedings could begin, he died by suicide in his prison cell on November 6, 1973, at the age of 30.
