On January 8, 2023, at approximately 9:54 a.m., Long Beach Police Department officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 900 block of Daisy Avenue, near Drake Park. Upon arrival, they discovered 30-year-old Long Beach resident Jaevion Tasby suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. Officers administered aid until Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived and transported Tasby to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Witnesses indicated that Tasby had been working on a car outside his apartment building in the Willmore neighborhood earlier that morning. He reportedly walked to a nearby corner store and was returning home when an unknown male suspect approached him and fired multiple gunshots before fleeing the scene. Neighbors described Tasby as someone who was always happy and willing to lend out tools to others in the neighborhood. He could often be seen working on cars in front of his apartment.

The investigation initially yielded few leads, with detectives believing the incident was not random and that Tasby had been specifically targeted. On April 27, 2023, a 15-year-old male resident of Long Beach was arrested on a weapons violation. While in custody, additional charges of robbery and kidnapping were filed against him. On June 20, 2023, homicide detectives re-booked the juvenile suspect for the murder of Tasby. Authorities have not disclosed how they linked the teenager to the killing but continue to investigate the motive, maintaining that the suspect specifically targeted the victim.

The 15-year-old suspect is currently being held without bail. Detectives have presented the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration. The Long Beach Police Department continues to urge anyone with information regarding the incident to contact Homicide Detectives Michael Hubbard or Chasen Contreras at (562) 570-7244.
