On January 14, 2023, Deputy Darnell Calhoun, a 30-year-old officer with the Riverside County Sheriff's Department, was fatally shot in Lake Elsinore, California. Deputy Calhoun was responding to a domestic violence call when the incident occurred. Upon arrival, he was confronted by the suspect and sustained critical injuries from gunfire. Despite being transported to a local hospital, Deputy Calhoun succumbed to his injuries.
