On January 28, 2023, 28-year-old Navy veteran and father of two, Carl Anthony Flenoy Jr., was fatally shot while driving in Los Angeles County. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on the southbound 405 Freeway off-ramp at La Tijera Boulevard near Los Angeles International Airport. Flenoy was returning home to Inglewood with his girlfriend, Bria Echols, after an evening out in Marina Del Rey.
As they exited the freeway, a vehicle pulled up behind them, and two men approached their car.
One suspect attempted to open the passenger-side door, which was locked, while the other approached the driver's side and fired multiple shots into the vehicle. Flenoy was struck in the head, causing the car to collide head-on with another vehicle. Echols immediately sought help, but Flenoy was unresponsive and pronounced dead at the scene.
The assailants fled the scene in a four-door burgundy sedan. Unfortunately, nearby surveillance cameras were not operational at the time, hindering the investigation. Authorities have not identified any suspects or made arrests in connection with the case. The California Highway Patrol has urged anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing the need for community assistance in solving this crime.
Flenoy's death has left his family and community devastated. Described as a loving father, dedicated partner, and respected Navy veteran, his loss is deeply felt. Echols, now raising their 14-month-old daughter alone, expressed her grief and fear following the tragedy, noting that such a violent act seemed inexplicable given Flenoy's character and their peaceful evening prior to the incident.
