John Demchik, a 13-year-old boy, tragically lost his life on June 26, 1971, in Inglewood, Los Angeles County, California. His death was the result of a brutal murder committed by Patrick Kearney, a notorious serial killer known as the "Trash Bag Killer." Kearney was convicted of murdering at least 21 young men and boys between 1962 and 1977, though he is suspected of having killed as many as 43 individuals.
His crimes made him one of the most prolific serial murderers in California history.
John Demchik was shot to death by Kearney, who preyed on young victims throughout his years of criminal activity. Demchik's remains were not discovered until February 8, 1973, in Imperial County, California, nearly two years after his disappearance. His murder was part of a larger pattern of violence carried out by Kearney, who was eventually apprehended and sentenced to life in prison for his crimes.
Kearney was convicted and is currently serving multiple life sentences at California’s Mule Creek State Prison. His arrest and conviction brought some measure of justice to the families of his victims, including John Demchik. However, the full extent of Kearney’s crimes remains a chilling reminder of the dangers posed by serial offenders.
