On January 30, 2023, at approximately 8 p.m., 35-year-old Lamar Laron Converse was fatally shot multiple times near 167th Avenue and East 14th Street in the Ashland community of unincorporated Alameda County, California. Converse was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Investigations by the Alameda County Sheriff's Office, with assistance from the U.S.
Marshals Task Force, led to the arrest of a 17-year-old male suspect from Oakland on February 23, 2023. Authorities believe the incident stemmed from an attempted robbery during a drug transaction, during which the suspect allegedly shot Converse multiple times. The suspect was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Alameda County Juvenile Justice Center. Due to his age, the suspect's identity has not been publicly disclosed.
In September 2023, the juvenile suspect admitted to the shooting in court. Despite the severity of the crime, the Alameda County District Attorney's Office decided to prosecute the case in juvenile court, declining a petition from the Sheriff's Office to try the suspect as an adult. Consequently, the suspect was sentenced to serve up to seven years in the Juvenile Justice Center, with the possibility of earlier release for good behavior. Additionally, he is prohibited from possessing a firearm until the age of 30.
