Ulises Jimenez, a 20-year-old Hispanic male from San Jose, California, was known to his family as "Junior." A cousin remembered him as a kind, loving soul who always put others before himself and would go above and beyond for the people he loved. His family and friends meant the world to him, and those who knew him well saw his goofy side. He was never too shy to dance and sing, no matter who was watching.
On the night of February 3, 2023, Jimenez was shot at a residence in East San
Jose. He was rushed to Regional Medical Center, where he underwent three surgeries. Despite the medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away the following day, on February 4, 2023.
Following an investigation into the shooting, authorities arrested a suspect, Anthony James Samaro. The Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office subsequently charged Samaro with murder for the fatal shooting of Ulises Jimenez.
At the time of his death, Jimenez was being prosecuted in connection with a high-profile incident that occurred during the 2021 holiday shopping season. On December 20, 2021, Jimenez and an associate allegedly approached a man inside the crowded Westfield Oakridge Mall and stole his jewelry in a strong-arm robbery. As they fled into a crowd of shoppers, the robbery victim pulled out a concealed handgun that had been illegally modified to be fully automatic and fired at them. Though no one was hit by the gunfire, the incident caused hundreds of shoppers to shelter in place for hours. Jimenez was later arrested and was facing robbery charges.
As of February 2023, the murder case against Anthony James Samaro was proceeding through the court system.
