On April 6, 2023, 72-year-old James MacEgan and his wife, Patricia, were taking an afternoon walk in Mahany Park, Roseville, California, when they were unexpectedly caught in a violent confrontation between law enforcement and an armed suspect. The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Eric James Abril, was the subject of a California Highway Patrol (CHP) operation related to a felony investigation into a previous highway shooting.
When officers attempted to serve a search warrant, Abril opened fire, injuring CHP Officer Matthew Hiatt, and fled into the park.
Seeking to evade capture, Abril encountered the MacEgans, who had taken cover in the grass near a creek after hearing the gunfire. He fatally shot James and took Patricia hostage, using her as a human shield during the ensuing standoff with law enforcement. Despite the tense situation, officers managed to apprehend Abril after he shot Patricia in the shoulder; she survived her injuries.
Abril was charged with multiple offenses, including murder, attempted murder, and kidnapping. While in custody, he managed to escape from Sutter Roseville Medical Center on July 9, 2023, by defeating his restraints during a deputy's absence. His escape prompted a 33-hour manhunt, culminating in his recapture in Rocklin, California.
