On April 21, 2023, at approximately 9:31 p.m., the Tracy Police Department received reports of gunfire near North Central Avenue and First Street in Tracy, California. Upon arrival, officers discovered 23-year-old Tracy resident Khyrei Currie in the 100 block of East First Street, suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite immediate medical attention and transport to a local hospital, Currie succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
The ensuing investigation revealed that the shooting occurred at McDonald Park, located in the 100 block of Central Avenue. Over the following year, detectives from the Tracy Police Department diligently pursued leads, ultimately identifying two suspects: 24-year-old Juan Santos of Tracy and 18-year-old Adrian Darbison of Manteca.
On May 14, 2024, coordinated operations were conducted across multiple locations, including the 2900 block of North MacArthur Drive in Tracy, the 1500 block of Sephos Street in Manteca, the 1900 block of Darrah Street in Ceres, and the 1000 block of West 9th Street in Tracy. These operations involved various units such as the General Investigations Unit, Special Investigations Unit, Special Enforcement Team, and the Crisis Response Unit. Both Santos and Darbison were apprehended during these operations.
Following their arrests, Santos and Darbison were booked into the San Joaquin County Jail on charges of murder and conspiracy. The Tracy Police Department has expressed gratitude to the Manteca Police Department, Delta RATT, Ceres Police Department SWAT, and Turlock Police Department SWAT for their assistance in bringing the investigation to a successful resolution.
