On July 18, 2023, 13-year-old Amadeus Rain Miller-Ramos tragically lost his life in Oroville, California. Born on August 10, 2009, Amadeus was fatally shot while riding in a stolen vehicle with three other juveniles. One of the occupants, a 16-year-old boy, was handling a firearm in the back passenger seat when it discharged, striking Amadeus, who was seated in the front passenger seat. The shooter claimed he was unaware the weapon was loaded at the time.
Following the incident, the juveniles placed Amadeus's body in a field near the intersection of 18th Street and Tehama Avenue in Thermalito, a nearby community. The Oroville Police Department discovered an abandoned stolen vehicle with evidence suggesting a shooting had occurred inside. This led them to contact the Butte County Sheriff's Office, which initiated an investigation. Detectives subsequently located Amadeus's body in the field.
The 16-year-old responsible for the shooting was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter and personal use of a firearm. He was booked into the Butte County Juvenile Hall. During court proceedings, the juvenile admitted to the charges, expressing remorse for his actions. On September 27, 2023, after hearing emotional statements from Amadeus's friends and family, the juvenile court judge sentenced the 16-year-old to remain in custody at the Butte County Juvenile Hall.
