On July 29, 2023, at approximately 10:55 p.m., a tragic shooting occurred in the 2100 block of East 99th Street in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles. The incident claimed the life of 19-year-old Los Angeles resident, Kyimonte Johnson, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner determined the cause of death to be a gunshot wound to the back, classifying the manner of death as homicide.
In addition to Johnson's fatal injuries, three other individuals—a man and two women—sustained non-life-threatening injuries during the shooting. They transported themselves to a nearby hospital for treatment.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the victims had gathered at a housing development to watch a sporting event when multiple suspects approached on foot and opened fire into the group. After the shooting, the suspects fled the scene on foot and entered a vehicle, which then sped away. As of now, authorities have not released descriptions of the suspects or the vehicle involved, and the motive behind the attack remains unknown.
