On August 30, 2023, at approximately 10:30 p.m., Union City police responded to a shooting in the 33500 block of Seventh Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered 38-year-old resident Michael McNack suffering from life-threatening injuries. He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The incident was initially considered isolated, with no immediate threat to the community.
Following a nine-month investigation, Union City police, in collaboration with multiple law enforcement agencies, arrested three suspects on May 30, 2024. The individuals apprehended were Joseph Rosales, 31, of San Jose; Erik Anthony Harding, 39, of Hayward; and Wilbert Ard, 37, of Fairfield. They were charged with murder and conspiracy. The coordinated operation involved SWAT teams executing arrest and search warrants across the Bay Area, resulting in the recovery of five firearms.
The arrests were the culmination of extensive investigative efforts by Union City detectives, with support from agencies including the East Palo Alto Police Department, San Mateo County District Attorney's Office, and the FBI. The suspects were booked into county jails corresponding to their respective jurisdictions. The Union City Police Department continues to investigate the case and has urged anyone with additional information to come forward.
