On October 21, 2023, 16-year-old Ke'Marion Tucker, a resident of Brentwood and student at Liberty High School, was fatally shot at a house party in Oakley, California. The incident occurred at a residence in the 400 block of Shannon Way, where a gathering of teenagers was underway. Prior to the shooting, Oakley police had responded to a noise complaint at the location. Officers spoke with an 18-year-old female resident who was attempting to shut down the party as more youths continued to arrive. She declined police assistance in dispersing the crowd.
Approximately 30 minutes after the initial police visit, a group of 20 to 30 individuals reportedly entered the property through a side gate after finding the front door locked. Shortly thereafter, gunshots were heard, and attendees were seen fleeing the scene. Responding officers discovered Tucker deceased at the scene, with three other teenagers—a 17-year-old female, a 16-year-old male, and a 15-year-old male—suffering from gunshot wounds. The injured teens were transported to a hospital and were expected to survive.
In the days following the shooting, Oakley police, with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service, arrested 18-year-old Antioch resident, Jason Walizada, on October 25, 2023, in connection with the incident. However, due to insufficient evidence at that time, Walizada was released from custody pending further investigation.
Subsequent investigative efforts led to the arrest of 18-year-old Oakley resident, Sean Karp, on November 30, 2023. Karp was apprehended in Brentwood with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Service. On December 5, 2023, the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office formally charged Karp with one count of murder, including an enhancement for intentionally discharging a firearm, and three counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, each accompanied by enhancements for the use of a handgun and inflicting great bodily harm. Karp remains in custody at the Martinez Detention Facility, with bail set at $2.66 million, and is scheduled for arraignment on December 6, 2023.
The tragic death of Ke'Marion Tucker, a promising student and athlete, has deeply affected the local community, prompting calls for increased safety measures and accountability. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to seek justice for Tucker and the other victims involved in the shooting.
