On November 16, 2023, at approximately 7:32 p.m., deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department responded to a reported assault with a weapon in the 7100 block of N. Barton Street, San Bernardino. Upon arrival, they discovered 37-year-old Riverside resident, Sergio Oscar Castaneda, unresponsive with gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene. A 23-year-old female victim, whose identity remains confidential, was also found with gunshot injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
The Sheriff's Specialized Investigations Division, Homicide Detail, took over the investigation and identified 25-year-old San Bernardino resident, Michael Pasillas, as the suspect. On November 20, 2023, with assistance from the Sheriff's Specialized Enforcement Division, Pasillas was located and taken into custody. He was subsequently arrested and booked at the Central Detention Center on charges of murder.
