Jonathan Larry Harden, a 23-year-old resident of Banning, California, tragically lost his life on February 13, 2015, following a high-speed police pursuit in San Bernardino. The incident began when Harden allegedly stole a white 2013 Scion XB that was left running in front of a nursing home in Banning. Utilizing the vehicle's GPS, police tracked the car and attempted to pull Harden over.
However, he refused to stop, leading officers on a dangerous chase through surface streets and onto the 215 Freeway.
During the pursuit, Harden drove recklessly, reaching speeds of up to 100 mph, running traffic lights, and endangering the safety of other drivers. The chase intensified as Harden exited the freeway at University Avenue, crashed into several cars, and then reentered the freeway. Officers attempted to stop him by spinning his car around twice, but Harden continued to evade capture. The pursuit came to a deadly conclusion when Harden allegedly tried to ram a police patrol car, prompting officers to open fire. Five officers discharged approximately 18 rounds, resulting in Harden's death at the scene.
