On December 9, 2023, at approximately 2:26 PM, Santa Maria police officers responded to reports of a shooting near the intersection of Western Avenue and Agnes Avenue. Upon arrival, they found 15-year-old Jesus Cabrera Valverde suffering from gunshot wounds. Valverde, a resident of Santa Maria and a student at Pioneer Valley High School, received immediate medical attention and was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
In the days following the incident, the Santa Maria Police Department's Detective Bureau conducted an intensive investigation. On December 20, 2023, around 5:00 AM, a coordinated operation involving Santa Maria Police Department detectives, SWAT members, and the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office SWAT Team executed search warrants at multiple residences in Santa Maria. This operation led to the arrest of a 17-year-old male suspect, who was subsequently booked into the Santa Maria Juvenile Hall on charges of murder with gang enhancements.
