On December 30, 2023, 29-year-old Adrian Gibbs was fatally shot at the Hyde Park K-Line Metro Station in Los Angeles, located at Slauson Avenue and Crenshaw Boulevard. Gibbs sustained a gunshot wound to the back and was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) launched an investigation and identified 24-year-old Dwight Panton as the primary suspect.
Panton was apprehended on January 1, 2024, near 50th Street and 9th Avenue. At the time of his arrest, he was reportedly wearing the same clothing observed during the murder and was found in possession of a handgun.
On January 3, 2024, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office charged Panton with the murder of Adrian Gibbs. Additionally, Panton faced two counts of attempted murder and one count of assault with a firearm, linked to separate shootings in the Leimert Park area and the city of Inglewood. He was held on $3.1 million bail.
The incident reportedly began with an argument between Gibbs and a group of individuals on a walkway near the Metro station. The exact motive behind the shooting remains under investigation.
