On January 3, 2024, at approximately 6:10 p.m., Salinas Police responded to a report of a man down in the 1000 block of Sieber Street. Upon arrival, officers found 24-year-old Ramon Angel Basurto suffering from a gunshot wound in the parking lot of an apartment complex. Despite medical personnel's efforts, Basurto succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Basurto, originally from Chihuahua, Mexico, had settled in Salinas, California, where he worked as a field laborer to support his growing family. He and his longtime partner, Victoria Juarez, were expecting their third child at the time of his passing. Known for his love of music, particularly Mixteca and rap, Basurto enjoyed spending time with friends and family, and cherished playing with his children.
On the evening of the incident, Basurto was in the parking lot near his residence, listening to music. His eldest son, playing outside, discovered him lying on the ground and alerted Juarez, who immediately called emergency services. The family is devastated by the loss, with Juarez describing the experience as a nightmare. Funeral services were planned in Watsonville, with intentions to transport Basurto's body to Mexico for final rites.
The Salinas Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide but, as of the latest available information, had not identified any suspects or motives. Authorities urged anyone with information to contact Detective Pete Gomez at 831-758-7162 or the anonymous tip line at 831-775-4222.
Basurto's death marked the third homicide in Salinas within a week, raising concerns among residents and law enforcement about the surge in violence. The community mourned the loss of a young father and called for increased efforts to address safety in the area.
