On January 6, 2024, a tragic incident unfolded in Reedley, California, resulting in the deaths of four family members, including 44-year-old Guadalupe "Kiki" Chavez Bonds. The Reedley Police Department responded to reports of a burglary at the Bonds' residence on South Church Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered signs of a violent crime, including an empty, forcibly opened gun safe. In the backyard, they found the bodies of Guadalupe and her grandfather-in-law, 81-year-old Billy Bonds.
Further investigation led to the discovery of a third victim, 61-year-old Darrell Bonds, buried in a shallow grave on the property. Darrell was Billy's son and the father of Guadalupe's husband, Matthew Bonds. Matthew, initially reported missing, was later found deceased in a detached garage at a neighboring property on January 9, 2024. Autopsy reports confirmed that all four victims died from gunshot wounds.
Authorities arrested a 17-year-old male neighbor in connection with the murders. The suspect, whose identity remains undisclosed due to his age, faces four counts of homicide. His mother, 34-year-old Brynn Curtis, and her boyfriend, 21-year-old Rafael Gonzalez, were also arrested and charged with accessory after the fact, as they allegedly assisted in covering up the crimes. Both Curtis and Gonzalez have since been released on bail.
The motive behind the killings is still under investigation. However, the discovery of the emptied gun safe suggests that theft may have been a contributing factor. The Reedley Police Department continues to gather evidence and has expressed the belief that additional individuals may be involved. They urge anyone with pertinent information to come forward to aid in bringing justice for the Bonds family.
In the wake of this tragedy, the Reedley community has come together to mourn the loss of the Bonds family. A candlelight vigil was held on January 12, 2024, where over 100 residents gathered to honor the victims and support the grieving family. Friends and family remembered Guadalupe, affectionately known as "Kiki," as a compassionate and kind soul who was always willing to help others.
