On January 29, 2024, 44-year-old Melissa Sue (Garrelts) Long was fatally shot in her home in Alpaugh, California. Her husband, 56-year-old Robert Long, transported her to a nearby hospital in Delano, where she succumbed to her injuries. Authorities arrested Robert Long at the hospital on suspicion of murder.
The Tulare County Sheriff's Office had a history of responding to domestic disturbances at the Long residence, with at least ten prior visits.
In July 2022, Robert was arrested for chasing Melissa with a knife. Despite the serious nature of the incident, Melissa reportedly urged prosecutors to drop the charges. Robert eventually pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor domestic violence charge, resulting in three years of probation and a 52-week counseling program. This case was resolved just a week before Melissa's death.
Following the shooting, Robert Long was charged with murder and the personal and intentional discharge of a firearm causing death, each carrying a potential sentence of 25 years to life. He also faced a separate count of making criminal threats against another individual on the day of the homicide. During court proceedings, Melissa's parents expressed their grief and commitment to seeking justice for their daughter.
Melissa was remembered by her family and friends as a loving individual who faced life's challenges with unparalleled fierceness. She enjoyed gardening, diamond art, and caring for her Boston Terriers. In lieu of flowers, her family requested memorials be sent to Ascend Domestic Advocacy, highlighting the importance of supporting victims of domestic violence.
