On the night of February 11, 2024, 24-year-old Kevin Parada was fatally shot near the Martha Escutia Primary Center in Bell, California. Parada, a husband and father residing nearby, was standing outside his apartment with a friend when a dark red SUV approached. A passenger in the vehicle reportedly asked, "Where are you from?" before opening fire, striking Parada and narrowly missing his companion. Parada succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
This tragic incident was part of a series of shootings that occurred over a few hours in southeast Los Angeles County, resulting in four deaths. The other victims included a 27-year-old man in the Florence-Firestone area, 14-year-old Javier Pedraza Jr. near the Ellen Ochoa Learning Center in Cudahy, and a homeless man in Huntington Park. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department linked these shootings through surveillance footage, which identified a red Honda Pilot SUV present at each crime scene.
Authorities arrested two suspects in connection with these crimes: 42-year-old Gary Garcia and 20-year-old Timberland Wayne McKneely. Both are alleged gang members and have been charged with multiple counts, including murder, attempted murder, and conspiracy to commit murder. Garcia, who has an extensive criminal history, is being held on $8 million bail, while McKneely's bail is set at $2 million. Investigators believe a third suspect may also have been involved in the attacks.
