On February 11, 2024, 14-year-old Javier Pedraza Jr. was fatally shot near the Ellen Ochoa Learning Center in Cudahy, California. The incident occurred shortly after midnight in the 5000 block of Live Oak Street, where deputies found Javier and a 13-year-old boy suffering from gunshot wounds. Tragically, Javier was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 13-year-old was transported to a hospital in stable condition.
This shooting was part of a series of four fatal incidents that night across Southeast Los Angeles County, which authorities described as a "random murder spree." The other victims included 24-year-old Kevin Parada in Bell, a 27-year-old Hispanic man in the Florence-Firestone area, and an unidentified man in Huntington Park.
Investigators identified a red Honda Pilot SUV present at each crime scene through surveillance footage. This led to the arrests of 42-year-old Gary Jonathan Garcia Jr. and 20-year-old Timberland Wayne McKneely, both alleged gang members. They were charged with multiple counts of murder and attempted murder. A third suspect, a juvenile, was also arrested in connection with the shootings.
The motive behind these attacks remains unclear, as the victims appeared to have been targeted randomly. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Capt. Andrew Meyer stated, "It appears this was a random murder spree; however, homicide investigators have not ruled anything out."
Javier's death has deeply affected the Cudahy community. Family and friends held a vigil near the school, expressing shock, grief, and anger over the senseless violence. A family friend mentioned that Javier had simply gone out for some fresh air when he was killed.
As the legal proceedings against the suspects continue, the community seeks justice for Javier and the other victims, hoping to restore a sense of safety and peace in the area.
