On March 19, 2024, 63-year-old Pleasant Hill resident Peter John Popovich was fatally shot during an attempted robbery near his home on Twinbridge Circle. Popovich, employed in the legal cannabis industry as a delivery driver for packaging materials, was confronted by assailants while standing near his parked van. An exchange of gunfire ensued between Popovich and the suspects, resulting in multiple gunshot wounds to both Popovich and one of the attackers, 21-year-old Trevon Davis from San Pablo. Both men were transported to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, where they succumbed to their injuries.
Investigations revealed that Popovich possessed a valid concealed carry permit issued by the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office and used his own firearm during the incident. Authorities confirmed that Popovich and Davis were unknown to each other prior to the attempted robbery. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots and observed a vehicle fleeing the scene immediately after the shooting. At least one additional suspect was believed to have fled and remained unidentified at that time.
On April 18, 2024, after a month-long investigation, Pleasant Hill Police arrested two suspects in connection with the homicide. Eighteen-year-old Joe Washington Jr. and 20-year-old Money Green, both residents of Richmond, were apprehended in Sacramento with assistance from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office. The arrests were made without incident, and both individuals were booked into the Contra Costa County jail in Martinez.
