On June 2, 2024, at approximately 9:22 p.m., 38-year-old father of six, Nicolas Gandara, was fatally shot outside his home on West Duarte Road in Monrovia, California. Gandara had intervened in an argument between a neighbor and 42-year-old transient, Christopher Wiggan, attempting to de-escalate the situation. During this intervention, Wiggan allegedly shot Gandara in the neck, resulting in his death.
Following the incident, Wiggan fled the scene.
He was apprehended the next afternoon when he returned to the location of the shooting. On June 7, 2024, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office charged Wiggan with one count of murder, including a special allegation of personal firearm use during the crime. Wiggan pleaded not guilty during his arraignment and was held without bail. If convicted, he faces a potential life sentence.
The tragic event has deeply affected the Monrovia community, especially Gandara's family. His wife, Darlene Sarti, expressed profound grief over the loss of her husband, who was the sole provider for their family, including their six children. Community members have rallied to support the family, with a GoFundMe page established to assist with funeral expenses and provide financial aid.
Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón condemned the act, stating, "Such heinous acts of violence have no place in our society and will not be tolerated." The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department continues to investigate the case to ensure justice is served for Gandara and his family.
