On the morning of July 16, 2024, South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) officers responded to a reported shooting on the 2000 block of Eloise Avenue. Upon arrival, they found 41-year-old Dennis Crowe, a former resident of South Lake Tahoe, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Crowe was immediately transported to Renown Hospital in Reno, Nevada, where he remained in critical condition.
A second victim, a 32-year-old man, was discovered nearby with apparent blunt force trauma to the head. He was treated at Barton Hospital and subsequently released. The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Christopher Guzman, was located in the vicinity and taken into custody without incident. Initially, Guzman was charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and held at the El Dorado County Jail without bail.
Tragically, on July 22, 2024, Dennis Crowe succumbed to his injuries after being removed from life support, following the donation of his organs. In light of Crowe's death, charges against Guzman were upgraded to include homicide, along with multiple counts of felony assault with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment, and making criminal threats with the intent to terrorize. Guzman remains in custody at the El Dorado County Jail, awaiting arraignment.
SLTPD detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, working closely with witnesses and Crowe's family. Authorities have indicated that Guzman and the victims were known to each other, suggesting the attack was not random.
