Julio Rojas Cruz, a 37-year-old resident of South Lake Tahoe, California, tragically died on September 23, 2022, from a gunshot wound to the head. The incident occurred inside his residence on James Avenue. According to the South Lake Tahoe Police Department, the fatal injury was self-inflicted, resulting from the negligent discharge of a 9 mm handgun.
Despite the initial chaos and emergency response, which included efforts by South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue and Cal Tahoe JPA, Cruz succumbed to his injuries at Barton Memorial Hospital.
The investigation into Cruz's death revealed that the gunshot wound was accidental. However, the case took a significant turn when authorities discovered an AR-15 rifle and various ammunition in the bedroom of Cruz's roommate, Noe Corea. Corea, a 35-year-old convicted felon, was prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition. Consequently, he was arrested for being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. Corea was booked into the El Dorado County Jail with bail set at $85,000, where he remained in custody following the incident.
