On August 2, 2024, at approximately 5:45 p.m., 30-year-old Jonas Marice Calhoun was fatally shot in the 2500 block of Altos Avenue in North Sacramento. Officers arrived to find Calhoun with at least one gunshot wound; he was transported to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
Following an extensive investigation, authorities arrested 39-year-old Helen Burton of Woodland, California, on September 25, 2024, in connection with Calhoun's death.
Burton was booked into the Sacramento County Jail and is facing homicide-related charges.
Calhoun's mother, Sharaine Booker, described her son as someone who was striving to improve his life for the sake of his children. She expressed her grief, stating, "It's like they're looking at my son as just another statistic. Black man that got shot, and he's gone. And it's not right. He didn't deserve that."
The arrest of Helen Burton has provided some closure to the community, but authorities continue to encourage anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward.
