Ruth Cummings, a white female, was fatally shot on August 29, 2024, during a violent confrontation over a stolen motorcycle in Oildale, a community near Bakersfield, California. The tragic chain of events began that morning when a person at a home on Olympic Drive traded a car for a street bike. The motorcycle, however, had been stolen earlier that day from the home of Luis Villachana.
That afternoon, Villachana went to the Olympic Drive residence asking about his missing motorcycle.
He confronted at least two people who were there, striking one man in the face and possibly pistol-whipping him. The situation escalated when more people arrived, including Ruth Cummings’ husband, who was the father of one of the home's residents. Villachana then drew a firearm and fired a shot at the husband's feet.
As the chaos mounted, Ruth Cummings arrived in a white SUV with other family members. In an effort to protect his family, her husband attacked the armed Villachana. During the struggle, Villachana fired a shot that traveled into the SUV, striking Cummings. According to the prosecutor, she had been at the scene for less than 16 seconds. She was rushed to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
An investigation led to the arrest of Luis Villachana. He was charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder. At trial, his defense attorney argued that he had acted in self-defense after Cummings' husband threatened to take his gun. The prosecution maintained that the incident was about "retribution, not about recovery," presenting texts Villachana had sent earlier that day about wanting his bike back and the people who took it.
In July 2026, a jury rejected the self-defense claim and found Luis Villachana guilty of first-degree murder and attempted murder. At his sentencing hearing the following month, Cummings’ adult daughter spoke to the court about her loss and the lasting impact of the killing. Villachana apologized for his actions. On August 14, 2026, he was sentenced to 25 years to life plus an additional 49 years and eight months in prison.
