On September 20, 2024, at approximately 4:04 p.m., 31-year-old Frank "Frankie" Portillo was fatally shot at an automotive repair center located at 13600 Quinnault Road in Apple Valley, California. The incident also resulted in critical injuries to 44-year-old Joshua Augsburger.
According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, Portillo and Augsburger confronted 46-year-old Leon Sanchez at the auto repair shop. Witnesses reported hearing Portillo threaten Sanchez during the altercation. As the situation escalated, Sanchez, who possessed a valid San Bernardino County concealed carry permit, discharged his firearm, striking both men. Portillo was pronounced dead at the scene, while Augsburger was transported to a trauma center, where he remained in critical condition.
Sanchez was detained without incident at the scene. The case is currently under review by the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether charges will be filed.
In the wake of this tragedy, Portillo's family has expressed their grief and is seeking support for funeral expenses through a GoFundMe campaign. He is remembered as a devoted father, husband, and son, leaving behind his wife, four children, mother, and two siblings.
