On a tragic day in Sequatchie, Tennessee, two-year-old Nicholas Jaden Perez, a Hispanic male, lost his life in a devastating event that claimed the lives of five other family members. The horrific incident, which occurred on June 15, 2023, was the result of a murder-suicide orchestrated by 48-year-old Gary Barnett.
The violence unfolded at a residence on Pine Street where authorities were called to the scene following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered the house engulfed in flames. Once the fire was extinguished, the bodies of Nicholas, his mother, 34-year-old Brittnee Nicole Perez, his two sisters, 11-year-old Vanessa Nicole Perez and 6-year-old Lilyana Perez, and his grandmother, 52-year-old Regina Ann Barnett, were discovered inside. All had been fatally shot by Gary Barnett, Regina's estranged husband, before he set the house on fire and took his own life.
A seventh individual, Aaron Pursley, who was 28 at the time, was also shot but managed to escape the burning home and seek help from a neighbor. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation took charge of the case, classifying it as a domestic-related murder-suicide. According to the Marion County Sheriff, deputies had been called to the residence for domestic issues in the past, but there was no indication that the situation would escalate to such a tragic and violent end. The perpetrator, Gary Barnett, died by suicide at the scene, and therefore no arrests were made in connection with the six homicides.
