In the small town of Sparta, Tennessee, the life of 24-year-old Dara Jade Baker, a white female, was tragically cut short on July 10, 2023. On that Monday morning, law enforcement responded to a 911 call at a residence on Cherry Road. Inside the home, they discovered Dara deceased. She had been shot and killed.
At the scene, authorities found 38-year-old Clayton Matthew Watson of Pikeville sitting on the front porch with his eight-year-old son. It was reported that Watson had told his son he would be going to prison for a long time. The child's mother informed the officers that Watson had just shot and killed Dara inside the house. A firearm was recovered from the residence.
Following an investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the White County Sheriff's Office, and the 13th Judicial District Attorney General's Office, Clayton Matthew Watson was identified as the individual responsible for Dara's death. He was arrested at the scene without incident and charged with one count of first-degree murder. Watson was subsequently booked into the White County Jail, with his bond set at $1 million.
Dara Jade Baker was a native of the nearby Van Buren County and had graduated from Van Buren County High School in 2017. Her death left her family and the community to mourn the loss of a young life.
