In the quiet town of Kingsport, Tennessee, a family gathering turned into a scene of unimaginable tragedy on the morning of June 21, 2024. Angelique Lannette Ferguson, a 43-year-old White female, was fatally wounded in what police have described as an accidental shooting. The incident unfolded in a residence in the 400 block of Barnett Drive, forever altering the lives of those present.
Emergency services were dispatched to the home at approximately 8:55 am, where they found individuals
desperately trying to aid Angelique, who had sustained a single gunshot wound to her abdomen. She was swiftly transported to a local hospital, but her injury proved to be too severe, and she was pronounced deceased. Angelique, born in 1980, was a graduate of Dobyns-Bennett High School and a proud veteran of the U.S. Army, having served until 2005, followed by a few more years in the National Reserves. Her military career, a source of great pride, had been cut short by a car accident. Those who knew her remembered an outgoing personality and a kind, sweet soul who commanded a room and deeply loved her children and family.
The investigation into the tragic event soon identified Angelique's brother, 48-year-old Curtis Ferguson, as the one who discharged the weapon. According to the Kingsport Police Department, Curtis was removing a handgun from his pocket when it accidentally fired, striking his sister. In the immediate aftermath, while others rushed to Angelique's side to render aid, Curtis fled the scene. He reportedly went to a nearby fire station to notify them of the shooting before disappearing.
A warrant was issued for Curtis Ferguson's arrest on charges of negligent homicide, tampering with evidence, and being a felon in possession of a handgun. He was located by police on June 24th, driving a Ford F-150. When officers attempted a traffic stop, he refused to comply, leading them on a pursuit that crossed state lines into Scott County, Virginia, before he was apprehended. His charges were extensive, including felony evading, possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, and multiple driving offenses. Angelique's death left behind her three children, Kira, Dylan, and Ethan Brown, and her grandchildren, Amelia, Everly, and Kinsley, as well as her parents and siblings.
