In a quiet apartment in Swissvale, a suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the lives of 7-year-old Lyla Campbell and her mother, Megan, were brought to a tragic and violent end. On the morning of February 15, 2023, the two were found shot to death in their home, a place that should have been their sanctuary. The discovery was made after a 911 call reporting chest pains led first responders to the apartment building.
When they were unable to make contact, they enlisted the help of the building manager and found the door to the Campbell's apartment barricaded.
Inside, police found a scene of struggle. Megan Campbell, 39, a dedicated registered nurse who had recently been promoted to director of nursing, was found in her scrubs, her life cut short as she was getting ready for work. Her daughter, Lyla, a creative and beloved student at Trinity Christian School, was found in her bed, covered by a blanket. Both mother and daughter had been shot in the head at close range. Lyla, who loved to draw, pick flowers for her teachers, and explore the outdoors, was described as an inquisitive and outgoing child.
The investigation quickly focused on Kareef Easington, a man who had been living with the Campbells intermittently for several months. Evidence at the scene, including a pistol, dumbbells used to barricade the door, and other personal items, contained his DNA. Investigators believe the motive for the killings stemmed from Megan Campbell's decision to ask Easington to move out of her apartment. In a chilling final phone call with her mother on the morning of the murders, Megan was heard telling Easington to leave her house.
Kareef Easington was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder and tampering with evidence. During the trial, prosecutors presented compelling evidence, including the DNA findings and testimony about the volatile relationship between Easington and Megan Campbell. In April 2024, a jury found Easington guilty on all counts. He was subsequently sentenced to a mandatory life sentence in prison without the possibility of parole, bringing a legal conclusion to a case that left a family and community heartbroken by the senseless loss of a loving mother and her young daughter.
