In the summer of 2023, a dispute that began among children at a community pool in Pittsburgh's Brighton Heights neighborhood tragically escalated, leading to the death of 35-year-old Darkale LaShay Bonner. On the evening of July 12th, what started as a childhood quarrel at the Jack Stack Pool spilled out onto the nearby Brighton Woods Road, where it transformed into a fatal confrontation involving adults. Ten rounds were fired, and in the chaos, Bonner was struck in the head by a gunshot.
Another woman, her sister, was also critically injured in the shooting.
Rushed to a local hospital, Darkale Bonner succumbed to her injuries later that night. The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office officially ruled her death a homicide. In the immediate aftermath of the incident, a 26-year-old man, who was a lifeguard at the pool, turned himself in to the authorities at the scene. He was taken into custody as a person of interest, and police at the time believed he was the only individual who discharged a weapon. A pregnant woman who was fleeing the scene fell but was not seriously injured.
Despite the initial detention of the man, the investigation took a different turn. By July 14, 2023, no formal arrests had been made in connection with the shooting. Later, it was reported that the Allegheny County District Attorney's office had declined to press criminal charges against the lifeguard, ruling the shooting as an act of self-defense. In September 2024, Darkale Bonner's injured sister filed a civil lawsuit against the lifeguard, accusing him of acting recklessly and negligently. The lawsuit is seeking monetary damages. Darkale Bonner was remembered as a devoted mother of four and a graduate of Oliver High School who had worked as a Home Health Aide at Allegheny General Hospital and also performed clerical duties for the U.S. Post Office.
