In the early spring of 2023, the quiet of the Schuylkill River Trail in West Norriton, Pennsylvania, was broken by a grim discovery. On the morning of March 3rd, a bicyclist strayed from the path to find the body of 25-year-old Daquan Kennard Tucker, a Black male from the nearby community of Audubon. His body was found about 100 feet down a steep embankment in a wooded area.
An autopsy would later confirm that the young man had died from multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was officially ruled a homicide.
Investigators soon pieced together the final hours of Tucker's life. On the evening of March 2, he had visited the Norristown residence of 23-year-old Cody Reed. Tucker was acquainted with Reed and another man present, 23-year-old Marquise Johnson of Philadelphia. The three men left the home together and walked toward the Schuylkill River Trail. It was there, in a secluded spot, that Tucker was shot and killed in what authorities would describe as a targeted attack. The motive was believed to be robbery.
Following the discovery of Tucker's body, law enforcement quickly identified Reed and Johnson as the primary suspects. Arrest warrants were issued, charging them with first-degree murder, robbery, and a host of related offenses. A significant reward was offered for information leading to their capture, as both men were considered armed and dangerous. For over a month, the two managed to evade authorities, aided by their girlfriends who helped them hide and lied to a grand jury.
The manhunt came to a dramatic end on April 6, 2023, at an Airbnb in Atlantic City, New Jersey. U.S. Marshals, with the assistance of local police and a SWAT team, moved in to apprehend the fugitives. Reed was arrested without a struggle. Johnson, however, barricaded himself inside the rental unit. After a brief standoff, the SWAT team breached the apartment and found Johnson hiding inside a washing machine. Both men were taken into custody and extradited to Montgomery County to face justice.
In October 2024, Cody Reed and Marquise Johnson were both convicted of first-degree murder for the death of Daquan Tucker and were subsequently sentenced to life in prison. Their respective girlfriends, Hailey Covelens and Brianna Rose Radley, also faced legal consequences for their roles in attempting to cover up the crime. Both women were sentenced to jail time for charges including perjury and hindering the apprehension of their boyfriends, bringing a final chapter to a case that had tragically cut a young man's life short.
