In the late summer of 2023, the promising life of Dametrius McClain-Jackson was cut short just days before he was set to return to college. The 20-year-old Black man from Coatesville, Pennsylvania, known affectionately as "Meechie," was a former football standout at Coatesville Area Senior High School and a player for the Lycoming College team. His family described him as a bright and kind-hearted person whose death left a "Meechie-sized hole that can never be filled."
The tragedy
unfolded on August 23, 2023, as part of a planned revenge plot. McClain-Jackson and six of his friends armed themselves with several firearms and set out in a stolen Chevrolet Traverse to find and attack a rival who had reportedly been involved in an earlier shooting. Their search led them to a home on Community Lane, where they believed their target was located. McClain-Jackson and three others—Richard Rochester-Cottle, Victor Lara-Ortiz, and Garry White—exited the vehicle and began shooting.
In the ensuing chaos, another man was shot twice, and McClain-Jackson was struck by a bullet in the back. A witness later reported hearing him cry out, "Vic, you shot me." Investigators concluded that the fatal shot was a case of "friendly fire," accidentally fired by one of his own co-conspirators. After he was hit, his companions fled the scene, leaving him behind. Emergency responders found McClain-Jackson on the ground near the intersection of Third Avenue and Oak Street. He was rushed to Paoli Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy confirmed he died from a gunshot wound to the torso, and his death was ruled a homicide.
The investigation by the Coatesville City Police Department and Chester County Detectives led to the arrests of McClain-Jackson's six surviving accomplices. Victor Lara-Ortiz, Zaire Harley, Richard Rochester-Cottle, Garry White, Markel Jones, and Quadir Lavender were all charged in connection with his death. Prosecutors argued that every person who participated in the violent attack bore responsibility for its fatal outcome.
The cases concluded in 2026. In May of that year, a Chester County jury convicted Victor Lara-Ortiz and Zaire Harley of first-degree murder and related offenses, finding them most culpable as the primary instigators of the fatal ambush. On August 21, 2026, Judge Alita Rovito sentenced both men to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The remaining four co-defendants—Richard Rochester-Cottle, Garry White, Markel Jones, and Quadir Lavender—entered guilty pleas to charges including third-degree murder or involuntary manslaughter and conspiracy. They were also sentenced to serve time in state prison. During the sentencing hearing, McClain-Jackson’s sister expressed her shock and outrage, stating, "That night, people I consider family were there, people I trusted my life with. But I couldn’t trust them with my brother’s life." As of August 2026, all six men involved in the conspiracy had been sentenced for their roles in McClain-Jackson's death.
