On September 30, 2023, Pennsylvania State Police responded to reports of a vehicle over a hillside along River Road in Perry Township, near Ellwood City. Upon arrival, they discovered 39-year-old Julie Anne Wegmiller deceased inside a Toyota pickup truck, having suffered a fatal gunshot wound. Her husband, 40-year-old Edwin Wegmiller, was found outside the vehicle, further down the embankment, also with gunshot injuries; he was transported to a hospital in critical condition.
